Native Mascots & Misappropriation of Imagery: Symbols & Name Changes after Exeter Chiefs for Change

This event, titled ‘Native Mascots and Misappropriation of Imagery: Symbols and Name Changes following the Exeter Chiefs for Change Campaign’ took place over Zoom on the 30th of April at 19:00 London.

The panel engaged with the important work done by the group ‘Exeter Chiefs for Change’ which successfully lobbied for the changing of the mascot/logo of the Exeter Chiefs. The event invited four guest speakers, three of whom were involved with the Exeter Chiefs for Change campaign, and another speaker to contextualize the work in the UK within a broader discussion about the misappropriation of Native imagery in the United States of America.

We were delighted to host:

  • LeAndra Nephin (Omaha Tribe of Nebraska & Iowa, University of Oxford)

  • Tony Perry (Chickasaw Nation)

  • Rhonda LeValdo (Acoma Pueblo, Not In Our Honor, Haskell Indian Nations University)

  • Elizabeth Holloway (Exeter Chiefs for Change).

The event was chaired by Devlin Gandy (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, University of Cambridge).

The link to the recording of the event will be shared here soon.
